Prepare to fall in love with your new boxer baby becasue you will.
1.) Choose a name
a.) be very creative boxers have a lot of personality so should their names.
b.) If you can come up with a name that has a short term for it or just use a short name the faster they will learn their name.
c.) Constentaly use their new name the more you use it the faster they will learn it- such as when you are playing with your puppy, or when it is time for it to come eat, during walks or even during quit time on the couch yes I said couch because boxers think they belong where you are they will want to be right next to you or in your lap and it doesn't change as they get bigger.
2.) Get a Food and Water dish
a.) The best dish to use is a ceramic or stainless steel. Make sure that your puppy had fesh food and water daily.
3.) Grooming
a.) Well your in luck boxers do not have a lot of hair so your grooming requirments are not to bad. A bath definitely but not to much boxers tend to get dry skin easy so when you bath them use an oatmeal based shampoo do not use anything to help with shedding this dries out their skin really bad and they will have major dandruff.
b.) I like to use a nail clipper on the puppies that is actually for babies I find that it does better for the puppies, but as they grow you will eventually need a dog nail clipper.
c.) Try to make bath time and grooming a fun time the more fun you make it the better response you will get. Try to use treats to help reward them for being good during their grooming time.
4.) Provide Toys and Games
a.) Make sure that all toys are big and sturdy so that they do not get swallowed.
b.) Have a toy box that you keep the toys in so that when you bring them out your puppy knows it is play time alternate toys so that your puppy does not get bored.
c.) Your new puppy will love to chew on things so make sure that you have plenty of chew toys on hand or your shoes could possiby be its newly discovered chew toy. Your puppy does this to investigste new objects and to help loose its baby teeth.
d.) Play fetch with your new puppy it is good excercise for them and really fun.
e.) Try not to play to much tug-of-war games this can encourage your puppy to wrestle with or chase your kids.
f.) If your puppy is an only child make playdates for your puppy with other puppies or dogs its age and size.
5.) Make Sleep time comfortable
a.) Provide soft cuddly washable bedding so your puppy can curl up in it.
b.) Try to teach your puppy to sleep in a doggy bed in your bedroom. You may need to confine the puppies area unti it is totally house trained so it does not wake in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom on your floor.
c.) Sometimes using a ticking clock mimcs the mother's heartbeat and may soothe your puppy.
d.) Give your puppy a fleece or plush toy to snuggle with while it adjusts to sleeping without its brothers and sisters.
6.) Puppy Proofing Your Home
a.) Please keep all of the following away from your puppy
Plastic Bags, String, Holiday Ornaments, sewing supplies, Rubber Bands, Ribbon, twist ties, Paper clips, Erasers, Staples, Coins, small board games, Medications, vitamins, pill bottles, Dental floss, razor blades, socks and underwear.
7.) Deadly Household Plants to keep you puppy away from
a.) Philodendron, mistletoe, poinsettas, lilies, azalea, daffodil, tomato plants, foxglove, yew and hydranges all of these are very poisonous to your dogs to get a full list on more of them your vet should have a list you can get.
8.) Foods that are not good for your puppy or adult dog.
a.) raisins, onions, chocolate, and mushrooms
9.) Housetraining Tips
a.) Be sure that you take your puppy out often especially when they are younger than six months old because it is very hard for them to contorl thei bowels.
b.) As soon as your puppy is done eating, palying or taking a nap take it outside within a few minutes.
c.) Praise your puppy everytime it goes to the bathroom outside.
d.) Paper training is no longet advised because it confuses the puppy by teaching it two steps to go on the paper then go outside they only need to learn one to go outside.
e.) When your puppy squats to go to the bathroom say Hurry Up or Do It and praise it. This will teach your puppy to go in a designated area or to hurry on a cold winter night or day.
f.) Some puppies are afraid of their collars and leashes at first so let your puppy get used to wearing them inside the house.
g.) h.) Take your puppy to its tioilet area before its walk. That way they learn their routine is followed by a reward of a walk.
Walking your puppy on a leash regularly prevents aggression in housetraining and other problem behaviors. You should give your dog daily leash walks.
